National 4 and National 5 Design and Manufacture
The Course is comprised of two assessable units, namely;
In addition to the Units above pupils will undertake an Added Value Unit in the National 4 course and an Assignment in the National 5 course.
The Assignment in the National 5 course is worth 57% of the overall course award, and pupils will be expected to design and manufacture an object to satisfy a given brief.
The general aim of this Unit is to develop pupil’s skills and creativity in designing a product towards a manufacturing process. Pupils will take a given design brief and develop it to a final concept, generating ideas by applying research, graphics and modelling techniques.
Existing products will be examined and evaluated.
The power point presentation and notes below should be used by pupils to aid in their understanding of this unit.
The general aim of this Unit is to develop the pupil’s skills and creativity in manufacturing a product or prototype based on a given a design concept. The aim includes developing an appreciation and application of the properties and uses of materials.
Pupil’s will manufacture models and prototypes, applying a range of practical skills. The Unit is designed to enable the learner to develop an understanding of the impact of materials and manufacturing on design and the environment.
The power point presentation and notes below should be used by pupils to aid in their understanding of this unit.
In fourth year pupils must complete a course assignment. In the assignment the design brief is set by the SQA, and pupils must come up with a design proposal for the brief and manufacture a prototype. The assignment is worth 55% of the total award in the subject.
The links below will allow you to download all SQA Past Papers from 2014 to 2024. These should be used to revise for the prelim in January and SQA exam in May.
